more (carbon) Fibre in my diet

Post by Art Haberland »

I wound up cutting off the entire trailing edge of Flirt's keel to repair some badly done repairs. I actually found filler material that reached from the bottom paint to inside the hull.

Rather than just patching over the patches, I cut everything out and started over.

Then I ground it all back below the gelcoat so I could get a good chemical bond and have room to fill and sand.

Then when all was done.. I laid up a replacement part for the slot the rudder fits into and glued it into place with Resin. When I made it up, I left 6 to 8 inches of loose Carbonfibre fabric on either side. These I stretched out and folded over the keel to make a good strong and smooth bond to the hull.

I still need to do a little work at the top and bottom of the repair, plus adding more resin to get the cloth smooth, fairing it in, and doing some work inside the keel itself to help secure it all into place forever and ever.
