Re: Quick Poll: Where you sail
Nice looking boat, Jamie. I wasn't familiar with it. Is that an off-center companionway? Very cool. Did you do anything unusual with the inside of the cabin?
Thanks for the pictures.

Re: Quick Poll: Where you sail
I cut out part of the floor down to the hull so I had a foot well and layed down a couple extra layers of fiberglass woven cloth there in order to strengthen the hull. I encased the front part of the centreboard from the new bulkhead to the compression post which worked out nicely as it gave me some shelf space. Otherwise it is as is. Don't know if the picture gives it justice. I don't have a shot of the interior.Nice looking boat, Jamie. I wasn't familiar with it. Is that an off-center companionway? Very cool. I sail on the Saint-Lawrence, near Montreal. That Evans 16 is really nice BTW.

Looks great, IMO. Always liked the look of offcenter companionways and have thought one could do some interesting things with the interior that way. Nice job on yours for sure.Jamie wrote:I cut out part of the floor down to the hull so I had a foot well and layed down a couple extra layers of fiberglass woven cloth there in order to strengthen the hull. You're too kind. The offcentre companionway is a necessity since the mast is too close to have it centred, but it did work out well in this case. I received advice from the original SCA message board about dealing with eliminating my compression post and replacing it with an arch but the best advice I received was from someone who said to "embrace the compression post". Very wise words.Looks great, IMO. Always liked the look of offcenter companionways and have thought one could do some interesting things with the interior that way. Nice job on yours for sure.
Best,

I took a couple of photos after my final sail this Thanksgiving weekend - I wanted to show off what I have done, and maybe inspire others to attack their boats with saws to reshape them the way they want them. I know I am always inspired by others who modify their boats.
(By the way, you are welcome for Stuart Maclean and The Vinyl Cafe - my tax dollars support he and the CBC, and IMO is money well spent. I have taken my family to see him live, and we listen to him on trips to the cottage).

Oops. I thought I had added a second photo. The previous post shows the footwell I cut into the floor, and subsequently reinforced so I could stand on the hull and not have it flex.
This photo is a shot from the interior showing the encasement around the centreboard and the shelving possibilities it has given me.

Very nice. You end up with a pretty functional layout. It's nice to see something other than the usual V-berth/ quarterberth arrangement. Nice job.Jamie wrote:Oops. And thanks for Stuart McLean and the CBC. Here at 48º north we're close enough to steal the signals. We've actually seen the Vinyl Cafe live now twice, as he sometimes comes thorough Seattle. Brilliant show.
Although I'm a believer in free markets, etc., as a big fan of radio I continually marvel at how bland and predictable American radio has become. The CBC is incredible. Much more eclectic and entertaining, IMO.

Re: Quick Poll: Where you sail
I mostly sail in San Francisco Bay, usually launching in Redwood City
or China Basin.
Several times a year I haul my boat over the hill to Monterey Bay.
Once a year I travel north to Port Townsend for the Wooden Boat Festival. Depending on the weather I either sail across the Straits to Lopez Island or around Port Townsend Bay.
