Positive Floatation?

Ok, I can't believe I'm letting you see this before I sand and paint everything white.. but here goes. One picture is of the cardboard patterns for the "Vberth" and the other is the hard foam I've cut and stuffed up under the cockpit seating.

do you have this secured? I don't much about West Wight Potters (15?), but you won't want to have all that flotation --- float away when the seat cover popped off. Doesn't seem like there is anywhere to put the flotation so you would for sure be upright (or is that up-wight)

The only people who should not be allowed to see an unfinished boat in progress (or home under construction) are wives (maybe I should say Spouse)... Judging by the pics I'd agree that blocks in the seats and elsewhere is the way to go in your case. I'm a believer that you cannot have too much flotation when you are sinking,

I disagree, when seeking advice... you kind of have to show. I mean you wouldn't go to your doctor and say: "I have this nasty rash, and my wife thinks I should talk to a doctor about it... but I won't show you."

By the way have you had the West Wight Potter out? I have mention several times I am back into the sailing... I would like to move up to a pocket cruiser and spend the summers exploring the Great Lakes

I haven't dunked the P14 yet. It (as you've seen just a tiny bit) needs some work. We have a WWP19 that has been the steep learning curve boat. It's at the large end of Small Craft. I attended a Small Craft Skills Academy last year and highly recommend it. I learned so much and met a great group of people. I also met & sailed a SCAMP! If money were no big thing to me I'd have a boat builder friend of mine build me a SCAMP. He's fussy and precise in ways I'll never be. I think fussy and precise are admirable qualities in a boat builder. However, for now I am quite happy to be doing the WWP14 version of hot yoga folding my jelly donut self up into that little cabin reinstalling positive flotation.

Tiny bit (ok, a lot) off topic: In reading literature about the WWP14s & 15s trying to get a sense of how much and where to put floatation I came across the term "combings". I thought it was "coamings" as in a coamly girl (turns out, I also spelled that wrong, should be "comely")

What could "combings" come from? Any one know?

On the subject of foam. Whether or not pieces or poured It is a good idea to have it contained in plastic. Foam will absorb moisture at some point being in a plastic bag sealed will help in replacing it and keep it dry longer.

The location of foam up high is better. As mentioned a sail boat when swamped should float up right if possible. One of my boats has the foam up under the coaming also up high in the bow and stern.

I have seen where the foam has been under the sole and has been waterlogged. It was a difficult job to replace it. I also made the boat a hundred pounds lighter when removed.

Every boat is a little different and some foam any where is better than non.
