Hunter 240 and Catalina 22

I see your from Ann Arbor? I'm originally from the east side of Detroit,(nice place to be "from" ). My Grandparent's retired back in the mid-50's and lived on the North Channel just down river from Algonac. Another boat you might consider, (now if you haven't noticed, I'm a Catalina man ), is their C-250 water ballast. I know, I know, water ballast? Are you NUTS? But one time is all it took to convince me. My retirement boat will be a C-250 WB. They are easy to trailer and set-up. And the trailer weight once the ballast is dumped is only slightly more than my C-22. Catalina is a fairly conservative company, but they use the same mast and sails on the water ballast versions that are used on the wing keel versions. Unbelievably spacious interior with an enclosed head, with a door! The Admiral's really like that! Used ones are resonably priced, and there are fairly good numbers of them out there. And, if you want to take her to other ports of call, you can use them as a camper and stay onboard at the KOA's along the way. Fold down the swim ladder and step onboard thru the open transom for the night. There will be a couple of them attending the event at Havasu. One of my retirement cruises will be departing Lake St Clair and head north into lake Huron, up the eastern coast of Michigan and cross to the North Channel and into the Trent-Severn Canal to Lake Ontario, the Wheeling Canal into Lake Erie, then back to lake St Clair. The trip would be nice and comfortable with a C-250.

Hey Don - I think the Hunter 240, is very similar to the Catalina 250. I understand that they are both 'tender,' but that has to be a relative term and they can't be nearly so tender as my 400 lb 170.

I kinda like the lines of the hunter better, maybe there is a brand loyalty going on here - I really like my 170. All of the things I like and all of the things I don't like about my boat seem to be echoed on the 240. I think you are right that the 'admiral' would like the enclosed head better than the porta potty under the v-berth.

I have (somewhere) an copy of "sailing big on a small sailboat" that has a fairly extensive comparison of the two - I will hunt it down tonight!

2 inches of fresh snow fell today - it's good to think about boats, but it's a long time until May!

Hi John,

I too had a H170 for a couple years, in fact I think we may have chatted on another board before. I moved up to a Precision 23. It's been 4 years and I still like her. I can get relatively close to the beaches and it works nice for weekends aboard. I keep mine in the water, as it takes about three times as long to setup and take down compared to the H170. I sail out of Sandusky on Lake Erie. It's a good size boat for sailing to the islands or along the coast to Huron or Vermilion. I want to try for Geneva-on-the-Lake this year, or maybe even Lake St. Clair. I looked at the H240 back then and almost bought one. They sail ok and are certainly not tender like the H170.

hi, john I own a hunter 24 swing keel and they are not hard launch or retrive. I have not sailed it for year now,hurt my back ,going to down sizes. boat sail easy ,water ballested. david
