First sail and bonus damage!

Post by Art Haberland »

Yesterday my registration stickers finally came in for Spark, only took the DMV two months to get them to me. It was a nice day, but with fickle winds out of the southwest. I thought I would go down to Somers Point (name for Commodore Somers of Tripoli Fame, his house still towers over the Point on the highest point of land in the area) and see how the launching ramps were.

One mistake was mine, I will admit to getting the ropes twisted on the new jib furler, but no worries, I sailed on main alone. It was my first time out in 9 months, a relaxing sail to get back into the feel of it would be good. So I launched, headed out and discovered my error when I went to roll the jib out. Also discovered a missed a leak in the stern. Oops.

Sailed south across old familiar waters, I grew up on these waters, that I never thought I would actually sail with my own boat and had a good time aside from the pesky leak and an over abundance of biting flies that somehow managed to find me half a mile from land. Made it down to the bridge I grew up in the shadow of and turned back.

Hightide was at 3, I launched at 2 so I could scoot over the mudflats with plenty of water under my centreboard and it worked! Made it back to the ramp by 5:30. At this point the tide was beginning to run and Somers Point is on the receiving end of three rivers worth of water flowing out of the Pine Barrens up stream. I quite literally sailed into the ramp area sideways as I fought this current. As soon as I cleared the breakwater that surrounded the ramps, it all came to naught.

The two ramps share a floating dock between them. It's a nice ramp made of recycled plastic that interlocks together. The only parts that are not plastic are the galvanized hoops that hold the docks to the double set of pilings. As I cleared the breakwaters, I was suddenly out of the current and went from sailing sideways to straight ahead. If I had hit the dock, I would have scuffed the paint some. Instead my boat accelerated straight into one of the galvanized hoops and came to a ringing stop.

I did not see any damage, so breathing a sigh of relief, I retrieved my landrover and trailer and set about loading Spark back onto it. This is where I discovered the damage. I hooked up the winch and pulled the bow eye right out of the bow with no effort. The collision had snapped the mounting bolt right off.

Other than that, it was a great sail. I will not go back to Somers Point though. I do not want to deal with the current and the ramps are very shallow. I had to back in till the rear wheels on my Discovery were halfway to the hubs to even attempt to float the boat onto the trailer.

I ordered a new bow eye, it should be here by the end of the week, then I get to squeeze myself under the deck to install it. Next time I go sailing will be the town just north of me, Pleasantville. They have a very nice launching area with docks to tie off to (something Somers Point lacks) and "Lakes Bay", while no deeper than where I sailed, is not subject to the current Pecks Bay is.

Still, even the worst day sailing is better than the worst day at work. I still have another month of Furlough, so we shall see how that works out.

I sympathise with you! We can all relate! I once launched the boat without the plug in!!!!! An other time a shroud broke and I had to put the boat on the opposite tack fast. I lowered the sail and began to row back to the ramp. A oar lock bracket then became loose and I had to come back to the ramp on one oar only! Quite a spectacle!

Somedays are not our day! ;)

I ordered a new bow eye from Fisheries Supply. Looks almost identical (minus the white filler) and should be here by the end of the week. Then I get to squeeze myself up under the deck all the way to the bow to bolt it into place while I get my girlfriend or Niece to hold the eye part in place. Not a job I am looking forwards to.

And I am sore today. Between the wooden seats aboard the boat and all the pushing and shoving to get back onto the trailer, it was quite the workout considering the floorboards were awash when I got back.

I am extremely jealous. I haven't been sailing since Feb 11 this year. I get to go out to the boat and peek under the cover to make sure its not sinking! Now that we can legally leave our homes the temps are in the high 90's/ humidity 95% and wind speeds about 005 kts. I used to go out in these conditions 30 years ago, sit in the middle of the St John's River, pouring water over my head, catching every cats paw that stirred but no more. First of all I now have to pee about every 30 minutes because of the medication I am taking, that's awkward in an open boat with fishermen everywhere! Secondly because of my heart condition the heat really affects me and I have been known to pass out on the dock. Don't want to do that in the middle of the lake!

I will have to say I get almost as much pleasure from just going out and sitting on the boat or fixing this or that as I do from sailing. So waiting until mid September is not that big a burden.

Still Art, I remain jealous! Yours is truly a beautiful vessel. You should talk to Josh about an article on it. I can testify the pay is great and you won't need to pay taxes on it!

tomorrow. We had some thunderstorms roll through today. I might go check out the "biggest lake in south jersey". "Union Lake" in Millville. At least they only allow powerboats with 9hp or less, so not a great a chance of being run down

I hear you Lustyslogger. I also have heart problems and only go out when the temperature and wind is moderate. I have been out twice so far. Last year, I went out 4 times. I wish it was more but 4 is better than none.

Good luck on you sail.
Lake McBride in Iowa is where I keep & sail my boat. Its 10hp limited and mostly used by fisherman, sailors and middle-aged women and their kayaks. The 10hp limit makes it nice for sailing. The middle aged women in kayaks are the real threat to navigation. it seems that no matter where you go, they always seem to end up right in front of you. LOL
A damn separates Lake McBride from Coralville lake. Coralville lake is somewhat narrow, winding and has no limits. A couple years back some people petitioned to remove the 10hp limit. My guess is new home-owners that didn't look into rules before buying. Lake McBride is also home to University of Iowa sailing club and classes. The petition never got any serious traction.
