Rediscovering an old tradition

I decided to install a proper sculling oar lock on my boat. I was good at that when I was a kid! It is powerful because the oar never gets out of the water.
I will now have two options if I get accalmed and need some propulsion: Ordinary rowing and sculling!

Years ago I came across a couple of articles about the Chinese Yuloh sculling oar. My idea was to replace the stinky, noisy outboard on my 19' Mariner with a yuloh when we sailed in the Mississippi river. We quickly found the river was not a fun place to sail. The current was typically only a knot or 2 but the traffic and wing damns were no fun. These days we keep the boat at a lake and the only other form of propulsion is a couple of paddles.

I have toyed with the idea of building a breakdown yuloh to us on the SCAMP that I am in the process of building.

Those are my twelve foot oars. I was lucky to find these at a good price. The blades are so long that I think they can compare to real yuloh oars. It always depend on the conditions. There are places when rowing will be the better option and places when sculling will be more adequate. I hope to never find he need for a noisy outboard again and if I really can't help it, I will get myself an electric motor!
