Years ago, I got a set of plans for a Bolger Queen Mab, 7 foot catboat. The Queen Mab also has a push-pull rudder but it connect to a set of foot pedals in the bottom of the cockpit. I personally didn't like that setup, because if boat is healing you may be using your feet to try lean into the heal, which could put the wrong pressure on the rudder if your not careful.

I have also seen the rope steering setup on the Grace O'Malley by Christer Bystrom, which allows you to steer the boat from either side. Years ago I had exchanged emails with Christer. He said he did not use any turning blocks for the steering line and the friction would tend the rudder while messing about with the sails. Sort of built in tiller tamer.

rope steering is interesting, but I have never had a chance to even try it, so I cannot place any opinions on if it were something I would love or hate

I'd go with the MacGregor on looks, but the Arctic Skua appears to be an easier build and will likely sail just as well (if you're comparing the similar length version).

Took me six months to build a 15'6" bateau that was advertised as "Build it in one weekend!" so I know my limitations. ;-)
