bought a Montgomery 17
Told you to watch this space. I am the new owner of a 1986 Montgomery 17. She was located (and still is) in Babylon NY opposite side of Great Bay from Fire Island. I got a very nice boat for the princely sum of $6000 with a nice honda outboard and a fully serviced trailer.
After doing some research, I decided on the M17 due to her reported speed, stiffness, and rough water capability. I had even read the book on the one that crossed the pacific to Hawaii, so I was familiar with the boat long before I started zeroing in on one. She just ticks all the boxes, well built, stable, speedy, and capable of handling people who are not as young and spry as myself. Her size and capability also does not limit her to the back bays of NJ, but allows me to make longer coastal hops if I feel like a long sail to Cape May and back (40+ miles away).
Now to get her home.

These boats have the best of reputation. I also like the keel centerboard design.

Congratulation Art. I'm sure you'll be quite happy with your new acquisition Montgomery 17 are quite capable boats. Looking forward to a few pictures with your new boat.

Congrats on the new boat. If your looking for projects for the boat, you may be interested in the following cruising layout from the duckworks site.

that is some nice interior joinery there, but I prefer things a bit more open. I will be doing some cabin changes, but nothing on that scale and certainly not this year

Here she is: Montgomery 17 #406 Tea

Have to do some cleaning up, she is 34 years old. While she has not lived a hard life, she has more than a few nicks, scratches, dings, and questionable modifications and repairs that need sorting out. Nothing that would stop me from dropping her in the water tomorrow and going for a sail though.

She looks already pretty nice! Give us you thoughts about how she sails.
