Spoilt for choice

I want a sailing canoe. They look like the most fun on the water you can have for the least amount of effort. No trailer, no docking fees, little weight, and can go most anywhere in a few millimeters of water.

The question is: which one do I build?

Selway-Fisher has the Arctic Skua:


Chesapeake Light Craft as their waterlust sailing canoe:



Storer (of Goat island Skiff fame) has the Beth Sailing canoe:

Ian Oughtred has the McGreggor:



I just do not know. They are all so pretty!

How big is your garage? I once worked for a man who had four automobiles, a town car (Mercedes 300D), a sports car Datsun 240Z), a touring car (Cadillac Fleetwood) and a business car (Buick Electra Four Door) He used the Cadillac when he went to his vacation home in Jupiter Florida so he probably had another car or two down there). Who's to say you can't do the same with canoes?

Basement with outside access really, though 1/4 is taken up with my office and a 1/4 is my build area. The other half is storage, utilities, and the laundry room. I wish I had a garage, but the ground slopes to the point where it is two steps up to the front door and a dozen to the rear. I can stand under my back deck. To build a garage would require a fortune in cement to level it off.

Have you considered Hugh Horton's Bufflehead? I think Artemis is a variation on it.

well, I bought the plans to the arctic Skua from Selway-fisher. This will be a rainy day project when it is too nasty to go sailing or work interferes with being on the water. I am thinking this may be the first one built as I cannot find pictures of it anywhere.

Art. The easy part is done. Now comes the fun. Finding all the material needed. Scratching your head over the plans etc. How long do you think it will take to build?Looking at the drawing, I notice the tiller extend way past the mizzen. Does that mean that you can only turn one way?

it's a push pull tiller. I am not sure how I feel about those, if you drop it, the water generally grabs it and pulls it far far away. I may go with a remote tiller turning a rope back to the rudder itself.

Materials are easy, I have a mill half an hour from here that is father and son owned, they either carry everything or can get it for a decent price. As for how long to build.. "it will be done when it is done"
