WHAT TO DO IN THE OFF SEASON
My Sandpiper is under a tarp in a backyard and I must wait Spring before working on her. In the mean time I read books and look at videos on Utube. I just finished reading Longitude lost by Payne Harrison. Its not about sailing. It is a thriller. I'm also viewing videos by The Old Sea Dog. What a character.
What do you do to keep busy in the off season?

Re: WHAT TO DO IN THE OFF SEASON
I just keep on with my other things! I have been teaching at my own martial art school for a long time. I play my guitars. I enjoy shooting at the archery club. I may also take advantage of a clear sky night and take my telescope out. (If it's not too cold!

Martial Arts? Archery??
OK, fair warning.
NOBODY EVER DISRESPECTS MICHEL!!!!
Now, I am 100 percent with you regarding the telescope! I brought my grandson back with me from dinner to take him out sailing Saturday but I may break out my scope tonight to view the Moon and Jupiter in close proximity.
OK, fair warning.

Re: WHAT TO DO IN THE OFF SEASON
I was never so cold as when playing with Telescopes in winter. I have a nice little vintage Astroscan, but it is way too chilly to go outside and stand there while looking through it.

Almost as bad as ice fishing in Minnesota!Art Haberland wrote:I was never so cold as when playing with Telescopes in winter. I have a nice little vintage Astroscan, but it is way too chilly to go outside and stand there while looking through it.
But the winter skies have the most deep space objects so what do you do?

Re: WHAT TO DO IN THE OFF SEASON
I usually double all my clothings when doing astronomy in the winter. It is the only way since we have to sit without moving while observing and stay relaxed for the quality of vivion. What I hate the most about it is to shovel my spot before!

Re: WHAT TO DO IN THE OFF SEASON
Well, I took my 12 year old grandson sailing today on Lake Harris in Leesburg. It was nearly perfect. The highest temp was 83.5 and the winds never got above 3 kts. The weather report had called for "light and variable" and for once it was correct. I probably never hit over 2 kts but it was an enjoyable 3 hour sail. He had only been sailing once before, when he was about 5. I took him, his sister and his mother's cousin. If I recall conditions were about the same, I'll have to hunt up my diary from then. At the time his father had a 19 foot offshore fishing boat and although only 3 feet longer had more beam and was just overall a much larger boat. His reaction then was "This boat is too small". I almost agreed with him, glad I didn't. Anyway, it was one of those sails where there was nothing extraordinary but everything just fit. My grandson kept saying "This is just so pleasant!". No comments this time about being too small!
It was a very good sail, almost Zen like!
