I lived in "Balmer" for about 10 years and worked for the Western Maryland Railway. I was there from 1968 when I got out of the Navy until 1978. I was in the Naval Reserves at Ft Mchenry. There was a Destroyer Escort and a Submarine tied up at the reserve center. It was used as an oiler during the war. I got claustrophobic just standing on the deck!!!! The conning tower is about the size of a very small broom closet with room for maybe three people wedged in there, not the spacious space as depicted in old war movies.

By the way, I think Finland got a raw deal because of her siding with Germany. The main reason she did so was to protect herself from being taken over by Russia. She never participated in any of the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazi's and as soon as she could kicked the Germans out of Finland.

Back to Baltimore. When I lived there is was an interesting city. Very blue collar with the steel mills, railroads, and other industry. When I lived there the population was just under 1 million. Today is around 600,000 or a 40 percent loss and I won't set foot in the city after dark any more. I still have a brother who lives in Glen Burnie. The city is just a shell of it former glory.

Oh no! I made a stop there on the way back from a visit to Washington DC.

It would be quite a trip to sail from Montreal to Baltimore. ;)

While I dislike racing and yacht club types in particular, let's not confuse racing with sailing fast. A couple of years ago Howard Rice did an excellent "Out There" column on the benefits of being 'in tune' with your craft by getting the most you can out of her.

That's right... I don't think that the Finns had a clear understanding about what was going on in Germany. Finland had a huge red enemy and any ally was more than welcome.

I do not think racing is a requirement for becoming a good sailor. Any more than being a race car driver is required to be a good car driver. In fact, in "the real world" it may be a detriment.

But the techniques learned for sail trim and boat speed certainly can help. Racers tend to tack and trim sails more in an hour than a cruiser may in a long voyage. I learned a LOT about calm weather sailing trying to coax anything possible out of dead air when we raced a Thistle 17. ANYONE can go fast in heavy winds. The little tweeks and tricks pay off in the light stuff.

PS - Simo Häyhä is one of my personal heroes. The Winter War of 1939 is a period of history we should never forget. It shows what a determined small group can do against impossible odds and with obsolete equipment. When life gives you bitter ale, use the bottle to make a Molotov Cocktail.
