Winter in Perth, Western Australia

Post by mikeyroberts »

Hi all,

I went for a great sail last week on the last day of my winter holidays. Weather was pretty good - 20 degrees C, 10knts SE'ly.

Here's a couple of videos I took on my new GoPro, including use of my selfie-stick (broom handle). I think I need some work on my technique - bit blurry and shaky.

Nice video clips.

By the looks of your chart on the bulkhead that's a great sailing area.

Thanks guys,

my boat is a Sonata 6 - a trailer sailer developed in Melbourne in the 1980s: http://124.148.136.52/ourBoats.htm . Mine is the fixed keel version and lives permanently in the water on a swing mooring.

Because I was sailing mid-week, in the middle of winter I had the river to myself. There are 6 yacht clubs that use the area for their racing. 5 of them race on Saturday afternoons, so usually you can't see the water because of all the canvas (actually, more likely to be expensive laminates).

Upriver (North) is inaccessible for sail boats because of several low bridges and very shallow water. Downstream leads to Fremantle and the ocean. There are more bridges, but they are close together, so you only need to lower your mast once to get under them and in to the outer harbour. From there the Indian Ocean awaits with a few marinas up and down the coast, or offshore lie the islands of Rottnest and Carnac.
