How do I remove the old id numbers?
Hi all. I did a couple of Google searches, and a few searches on this forum.. I see how to remove 7yr old vinyl name decals.. but, nothing about the state mandated id numbers and stickers on the bow. I kind of bet they have been there for 20 years at least.. Maybe the whole 48? I've got a hairdryer and goo gone, but, please let me know if you've got a secret.

i've used plastic razor blades made by ScrapeRite -
https://scraperite.com/
these will not remove much of the 'glue'. Goo Gone, or similar, to clean up the 'sticky'.

Thanks for the tip about the plastic razor blades! Unfortunately, the ancient adhesive won this battle against the ScrapeRite, but, I can think of a hundred uses for a gentler razor blade.

Rub the spots with Brush Cleaner (available in some hardware stores and most paint stores - contains toluene and is not to be confused with mineral spirits or paint thinner). I have also had good results with plain 'ol turpentine.
And another fallback for removing adhesive gum is lighter fluid (naptha).
But the non-faded area under where the numbers had been may always be obviously different shade from the more weathered hull.

Hi Charlie, I guess you can't tell by the picture.. the goo gone and the plastic razor worked great on the sticky stuff. But, the white outer part of some stickers is still there. It seems like for years people have tried to remove them and then just stuck the new ones over & moved on. I'm amazed at how many states it's been registered in.. Va, Fl, Ma, Ms.. those are the ones I could clearly tell..

Sounds like one of those old suitcases with all the travel stickers on them! That adds some class to your boat. "Why this boat has almost been around the world at one time or another". My boat has been to Florida, GA and Virginia. Its almost a shut in!!Friends with SCAMPS wrote:Hi Charlie, I guess you can't tell by the picture.. the goo gone and the plastic razor worked great on the sticky stuff. Ha ha ha!! That's great! "Pristine" will never be a descriptor of my boat, anyway, so, I'll just embrace it. I'll dedicate that time and energy to the big question: Gin or Rum?

Gin and tonic wards off malaria and if you add a twist of lime you have scurvy covered as well.
Drink rum and you have to affect a British accent
Either way you can't go wrong!
