what to do if the outboard pull cord comes off in your hand?

Post by Friends with SCAMPS »

Just received SCA #94. Linda Swan teaches her lessons learned on her Newport 16... She says she learned what to do next time if the outboard pull cord comes off in her hand. But, she doesn't share that bit of knowledge with us in her article. How does one start an outboard w/out a pull cord?

You have two choices: pop the cover, remove the recoil starter bracket that covers the rope pully (if so equipped) and put the line back in place. It usually fails just beyone the knot that anchors it on the pully.

Other choice is to spin the pully by other means - like a cordless screwdriver with a nut adapter that fits the pully nut. We all have one of those aboard. ;-)

Like any other system - practice it BEFORE you need it.
