Summer Sailing Photos

Here is my Evans 16' "sailing". It was so calm that day that we ghosted along for hours which was a really great sail since my son and I were able to jump in the lake and swim around the boat while it ghosted along. We were also able to sail through a lot of shallows that we would normally never go near but since we were moving so slowly it was easy to spot any dangerous areas and avoid them. At one point I simply hopped out of the boat and shoved it sideways to avoid a rock.

Returning to Chula Vista Marina after a wonderful day of sailing on San Diego Bay

Portage Lake, Michigan. Sea Trials on the newly completed Tom Dunderdale design IO. This is a 12' dinghy sporting a 75 sq ft balanced lug. She sails very nicely, even though we were experiencing light winds that day.

Here on the south coast of the UK, the small 11'6" dinghy called the "Scow" is endemic all along the coast. Each sailing area has it's own version.

Here is the Lymington River Scow build by John Claridge


There is a National Championship for the Lymington Scow each year. It's a wonderful event with around 40 lug rigged dinghies enjoying the fun. In 2010 the event was at my club at Keyhaven. The pictures are wonderful, bright sparkling sea and blue skies. Winds built from 10 knots to 20 by race three. A friend leant me his boat LR365 with an orange sail.
