I've been thinking that a small raid in Maine should certainly be doable given the number of inns and campgrounds. The first thought was to do something down in Casco Bay, but I was really thinking of something more spectacular. Something that screamed "WELCOME TO MAINE"!
Why not a two day circumnavigation of Mount Desert Island? The East's second largest island and the North East's only national park. Home to the East coast's only fjord and historically, at least according to wikipedia, a place that has seen its share of real military raids.
So who would be interested in a 2 day, oar and sail event. Leave out of Lamoine State Park and finish day one in Somes Sound at Mount Desert Camp Ground. Day two leaves the campground and completes the circle. Total distance of about 50 miles. September 24th puts the tides right, with high tide around 8:00AM. This is a small boat affair. (The bridge to the island has a clearance of 25', so you either need something that will fit under, or the ability to step while under way.)
Anyone interested?

Re: Small Boat Raid around Maine's Mount Desert Island
Sounds like a great idea. Keep us posted. We'd be glad to mention the event in the magazine and run an article recapping the event. If we were a little closer we'd join you.—Eds
The smaller the boat the bigger the adventure.
