"Sierra Sailin' Safari" in August

Post by sunsailormw »

Hey, anybody interested in an August sailing adventure in California's high Sierra Mountains? A few of us sailors who met at the Havasu Pocket Cruiser Convention will be getting together around August 18 for a 7 to 10 day, multi lake, high Sierra sailing vacation.

Professional photographer Ben Pearson will be joining us and the “story” of this trip will be the focus of a feature article in a major sailing magazine. We’re looking for a few people who might want to join us and “be the story.”

This trailerable boat adventure would include stops at:

-Huntington Lake is considered the premiere alpine sailing lake in the country in terms of almost perfect weather, beautiful mountain scenery and highly predictable winds in the 12-18 knot range.

-Huntington offers such great sailing that few people realize there are two more fantastic lakes in this area. About 35 scenic miles away, including a drive through a redwood forest is Courtright Reservoir. This is the most spectacular of California's reservoirs. Courtright is virtually unknown to sailors and offers fantastic glaciated domes, bald eagles and consistent mild winds in the 8-12 knot range. If Yosemite Valley were flooded this is what it would look like.

-Nearby Wishon Reservoir offers mild winds, perfect summer weather and fun gunk-holing opportunities along its shoreline.

For "trailer-sailors" looking for beautiful scenery and adventure above 7,000 feet this is paradise. Here is a chance to trade 100 degree August weather for mid-eighty temperatures. The plan would be to spend 2 full days exploring each lake with a day in between each for de-rigging, driving and rigging. There’s no daily itinerary. Some informal racing is sure to happen along with evening “pot-lucks.” Participate as much or as little as you want in group activities. The goal is to simply enjoy the company of fellow trailer sailors in a really beautiful environment.
