We have just made our hotel reservations, slip reserved and added ourselves and the Red Scamp to the list of boats coming to Lake Havasu in February. Mike and I would love for the other Scamps to be there if at all possible to join us in representing SCA and the Scamp. (We are unofficial representatives at that!)

If you have launched your Scamp or will launch it before February, 2012 please consider joining us in Lake Havasu.

Due to our daughter's delivery date for her first baby, we will not be doing the Everglades Challenge in 2012. We have promised to be there with her in the delivery room and not out in the swamps somewhere!

This has freed us up to attend the Pocket Cruisers Convention and we are looking forward to being there.

Mike and the Red Scamp will be available for sailing to anyone who would like to try her out. We hope those interested in her would consider attending the Havasu event. Mike will be there to answer any questions, explain what he did and why, etc.

We are also going to be helping with the building of the John Welsford Sherpa dinghy that is being built as a demonstration during the convention by John Owens of JO Woodworking. This boat is to be precut and then assembled and built in the convention center as one of the events.

But we do plan to keep the Scamp on the water mostly!

Last night while reading the attendance list on the Sail Havasu event I noticed that Hull #6 might be attending from California. I hope so and that there are two or more Scamps there for everyone to see.

Is anyone else near completion? It would be great to get several Scamps coming each year. It could answer that question about comparing Scamp to the Potter 15 and the Montgomerys.

I also looked at all the free seminars being conducted and one is by Howard Rice who is coming all the way from Pohnpei, Micronesia. I bet you could get Howard to go sail in your Scamp with you if you bring it!

By the way, new this year to Sail Havasu is a program aimed at getting some homebuilt boats like Scamp to attend. All homebuilts are welcome and the building of the Sherpa is a demonstration to show the pocket cruiser group the ease of building lapstrake using John Welsfords methods.

We will be helping with the Sherpa build and around to give Scamp demos and rides, answer Scamp questions.

While never deliberately excluded, homebuilt boats will be new to the Lake Havasu Pocket Cruisers Convention. We have a few planning to join us at Havasu, a Goat Island Skiff, a Sherpa for the demo build, possibly a Skiff America 20, a Michalak Mayfly so far that I know of.

It would be absolutely wonderful if we can get a good smattering of the various homebuilt cruiser/day sailers to attend this year. We hope Dan Phy will bring Scamp #6 from California and we are encouraging anyone here who can make it to consider Havasu in February. There are beautiful homebuilts which are stunning in their construction which would be of interest to those attending.

The Havasu organizers are actively wanting the homebuilts, along with other small boats, to attend this year. We are helping with the building demo but more than that having our boats there would be the most help.

Plus, you get to meet Howard Rice and Dylan Winter, two great Small Craft Advisor magazine writers and adventurers. How cool is that?

Just a reminder that the Sherpa build, which is from a kit, has a seminar that goes along called "You CAN Build This Boat". This is Mike Monies and John Owens, of J.O. Woodworks, who is doing the kit. Mike is doing seminar on methods, tools, materials, etc. The build goes on all week.

This Sherpa is quite similar to a Scamp, just smaller and no cabin or vernada, but hulls and methods most similar. If you are thinking of whether or not you could build a Scamp, this would be a good seminar to attend, as it shows just how simple the construction would be from a kit.

Also, there will be both a finished Sherpa and a finished Scamp to look at for comparison of building.

SCAMP 1, Josh and his team, are off to Havasu! I'm sorry I wasn't able to join them.

I hope there is a good blow-by-blow commentary and video somewhere, either on theSail Havasu site or here.

Also, please check out one of those spectacular Neil Pryde SCAMP sails that Josh is packing. They are sure to become a cult classic.

Cheers,
Simeon
