It was a truly memorable sail. I left the dock around 1000 and returned about 2:30. The winds for the first part of the sail were hovering around 7 to 9 kts and I made very good time to Goat Island (real name this time). On the return trip the winds dropped to between 0 and 1 kt. I dropped a piece of bread in the water and it actually passed me!!. Then just as I decided it was time to hoist the electric jenny the wind shifted to a starboard reach, increased to about 5 kts and carried me right into my slip!!

I had a passenger this trip. A poor unfortunate fellow who sold his sailboat two years ago, bought a houseboat and then because he had two daughters starting college this year had to sell the houseboat. So he was in the words of the Viking Proverb "Bound is Boatless Man". I took pity on him and invited him for a sail. He made noises about buying my boat and I considered until I realized that then I would be the boatless man!! So, I simply made a standing offer to take him out when I could.

I can say with authority that I only had one incident that might have brought mirth to the dock birds if they had been out. Normally, I check my halyards to insure the sails go up easily. This time I did not and naturally the main halyard was on the wrong side of the spreader and wrapped around the mast. So, we spend 10 minutes or so trying to determine what went where. But after that all was well.

When I returned to the marina there was a new 25 foot Hunter being set up. I went over to the new owner and discovered he was the financial adviser from my bank. I looked at my $700.00 16 foot boat and then I looked at his $25,000.00 boat and wondered which of us was making the most money from his services!! :P

All in all it was a day that, for me, was the epitome of why I sail

That is a very interesting story. I agree at 100% about the big boat vs small boat at the end. Who gets the real sailing freedom? The guy with the big morgage on his boat and big insurances bill?... Not too sure about this!... ;)

Heres are some images of an other perfect Sunday evening: 8-)

Well, I guess that is one way to look at it and that is certainly the more rational approach but what I really meant was that he was making more money off me then I was by following his advise!!!

But you are correct. My little boat can be sailed easily by me, a new set of sails if needed will not force me into selling my youngest child into bondage (although there have been times!!!), anchors cost a lot less for a 16 footer than for a 25 footer. I draw a whole 6 inches of water when the centerboard is up so I can beach the boat if I wish, and like someone told me its a lot cooler in the cockpit than in the cabin during the summer!! I think it was Dylan Winter who said the view from the cockpit of a small boat is no different than the view from a large boat except you are closer to the water.

However, I still would like to know how much of my fees for his service went into buying that boat
