Cape Dory Typhoon questions...
I'm in the midst of making repairs to and refurbishing a Typhoon, hull #378, haven't sailed her yet, and am wondering how to determine the year built by the hull #. Also, what are the most popular/recommended headsail furlers and outboard kickers, by brand? May yet have other questions to follow...

Re: Cape Dory Typhoon questions...
Hi Alan,
My Typhoon is #1486 built in 1978. Like Dave suggests the last digits on the HIN will tell you the year built. HIN is stamped on the transom.(Or at least mine is).
Can't help you with the furler, because I don't use one. The kicker I am currently using is a 3.5hp 2 stroke Nissan, but will probably go with a 2hp when that dies, because less weight on the back better.
Here are some pics of mine;

Are you aware of the Cape Dory forum? Good place for answers;

Re: Cape Dory Typhoon questions...
Thanks for the feedback guys. There is no transom # on my boat- they didn't start requiring that until (I believe), 1972, so I know that the boat is pre-1972. Still curious about the actual year it was built. Thanks for the tip on the Forum, I'll try to locate it.

How do you know the hull number? sometimes there is coded information (as the others have indicated) on the stern of your boatAlan Stewart wrote:I'm in the midst of making repairs to and refurbishing a Typhoon, hull #378, haven't sailed her yet, and am wondering how to determine the year built by the hull #. Cape Dorys have a hull number plaque on them.

Would what the plaque look like give any indication of the year the boat was produced?Tim wrote:Cape Dorys have a hull number plaque on them.

Re: Cape Dory Typhoon questions...
As mentioned in the posts above, the hull number is given on the HIN which in the case of my Typhoon is stamped on the transom. Apparently Alan's is too early for that. The build date is not on the plaque, only the hull number.

Re: Cape Dory Typhoon questions...
good answer, but not one that fits my question
I am wondering if the badges changed from year to year and if he had a badge on his Dory, if it would give a clue to when the boat was built
