Abandon Boat?

I've read about Rimas Meleshyus' around the world attempt both on the blog and in the magazine. I have a question about just leaving his boat. Is that what's done? Isn't there an obligation of boaters to clean up their messes before moving forward to make more? In populated areas I understand that an abandoned boat will be stripped and hauled off in no time flat.. But is it right to just leave a big boat where it lands? This seems wrong to me. Anyone else?

I thought about that when I read the article. I just assumed the ocean would eventually take it and grind it up into ocean. I imagine someone could claim it as salvage. What happens when someone abandons a boat at sea?

I am going home this weekend and will get my CHAPMANS to look it up. I've poked around online but it hasn't been that helpful. I'll let you know what I find out. I was wondering beyond the "law". It seems to me we have some responsibitly to NOT abandon a boat in the first place, and then to recover or have it recovered if possible. Am I way off here?
