Out There

I just received #74 SCA. I was very excited about Howard Rice’s column “Out There”. This promises to be a very interesting topic. I am looking forward to hearing from Howard and joining in the conversation that Howard instigates.
Hailing from the southern shore of Lake Ontario I am interested in learning about all things that may prepare a small boat sailor for the challenging conditions of this little northern inland sea. Boat rigging and seamanship aside I would say that the two biggest mistakes a sailor could make are not dressing for cold water immersion and not having adequate emergency signaling/communication. After spending most of the seventies in Coast Guard helicopters flying search and rescue most of the dead bodies I picked up did not die because their boat capsized or ran aground or whatever. What did them in was hypothermia and the inability to call for help or to signal to rescuers once they were near by.
