Kayaking South Jersey.
With all my videos, thought I would just condense all these threads into one.
This is actually "part 2" to my kayaking the AC expressway. It picks up from when I pass under the last bridge. Unfortunately the wind had picked up while I was in the sheltered water and Lakes Bay is a big and shallow bay, perfect for building up a nice chop. These are the biggest waves I would want to face in an open Kayak like my Chuckanut.

Unfortunately, I also broke my Kayak in loading it back atop my Landy. The wind picked it up off of the roof before I could strap it down, sending it flying to the ground. The crash landing broke a couple of stringers and the combing, so this will be the last video for that Kayak for awhile until she is rebuilt and fixed. Do not worry though, I have a new(er) kayak to debut this week.

Re: Kayaking South Jersey.
took my new (to me) Kayak out today for my maiden voyage on her. The Chesapeake 17 is supposed to be a superb sea kayak, so with the ocean forecast for 2 to 4 foot swells, I went down to The Great Egg Harbor Inlet that separates Ocean City from Longport. Officially called Malibu Beach, it is more known as "dog beach" because our 4 footed friends are not only welcomed, but encouraged to come. This was my first attempt at a beach launch, on a new kayak, in heavier conditions I have ever participated in before. I hope the video does not make anybody seasick.

It seems like you covered some real distance in that time. How was the speed?... Long kayaks are said to be quite fast and easy!

Re: Kayaking South Jersey.
I was fighting some wind, but still managed one knot more than my usual speed even with it and the tide conspiring against me. While it was slower to accelerate, it was like a train once up to speed. At 17 feet (5.2 metres) it also turns like a train.
New video. I managed to patch up my SoF Chuckanut by sistering some of the broken stringers. I will be rebuilding her completely this winter. I need to fix the damage properly and fix a couple of mistakes I made when building.
Here is the video, I went up the Wharton State Forest, home to Batsto, a Revolutionary war era ghost town turned park. They used to scrape "bog iron" out of the Batsto river and make all sorts of decorative and destructive things out it. The lake is man made to power the sawmill, but thanks to our severe drought this year, it is running a foot (30cm) under it's normal level, turning this normally shallow lake half into a swamp. As the Batsto River is spring fed, the water was cold!

Re: Kayaking South Jersey.
I went back to the South River in Estell Manor today. It, like every Wed and Thurs, was too windy for me to take my little GP out, so I took out the Chesapeake 17 as I would be heading out into deeper and wider water.
If the forecast holds, I might actually get out sailing next week!

Re: Kayaking South Jersey.
this was an easy one, the trip was exactly as long as the video, so no edits needed.

Re: Kayaking South Jersey.
It was a terrible day for kayaking, but I wanted to get out to witness the implosion of the cooling tower.
