I read in the last issue article about the WWP 19 that someone sails one without the keel! That is interesting!

I would like more infos about this!

Michael:
I believe you are speaking about the Potter 15 & 19 heavily modified by Jim Gossman (aka, Goose).
He has removed the transoms from both boats and rebuilt to use HUGE outboards. The boats have dual rudders and wheel steering.
He removed and modified the houses.
He removed the centerboard (P15) and daggerboard (P19) and then installed in-hull ballast. He then installed 'chine runners' (look up a sailboat design called 'paradox' for how these work).
Neither boat has a standard mast. I believe both are cut down from Hobie catamarans and are rotating. The rigs are also very large when compared to the stock P15/19.
The boats will go upwind but a cross or contrary current will really make them sail poorly.
Goose really wanted to have the option to motor fast. This is why he removed the keels. Because of the excessive sized motors he can get up on a plane using the Potter's flat bottom and the water being channeled between the chine runners.
His boats are actually less beachable because the chine runners are vulnerable be damaged and result in deeper draft than a standard P15/19.

After some thinking and asking around ...
There is an SCA from about-ish 10 years-ish ago that covers Goose's P15 conversion to the chine runner, large motor and new mast hybrid. If you are really interested you can contact Josh to obtain a PDF of the issue.

Interesting! I don't really care about the big motor business but the rest of it intrigues me! Thanks Dave!
