What's the ICW reality for micro-sailboats (15 - 20')?

Having had the pleasure of sailing the ICW twice, I wonder, 20 years later, what the challenges are for the very small cruiser today - weather excluded, of course. Also, is the VIP now a super-crowded highway? Mr. Plummer's book The Boy, Me and the Cat describe the waterway I'd like to experience.
Is it possible to take a "back-water route," or am I being a pollyanna?

Well, Mike and I are only familar with two sections of ICW, the parts going thru Texas coast and the Florida coast. In Texas it is mostly a big ditch going thru desolate areas or else in the big cities, thru heavy commercial traffic. In Florida it mainly seemed to go through valleys of condominiums that shut wind off or made it difficult to sail.
I don't know other areas and maybe some of the past still survives. There are surely people on this forum who have sailed it quite recently! The Texas 200 and the Everglades Challenge both utilize the ICW for their routes.
I remember that book, too!
