I have Spark's stern all stripped, varnished, and polished. All that is left is to reinstall the hardware and apply the name... and that is my issue now.

I am leaning towards the smaller of the two.





What does everyone else think? With an transom hung rudder, I am limited to one side of the stern only, the smaller of the two gives a nice amount of wood on either side while still being readable without overpowering all the mahogany. The larger one shows less wood but is much easier to read, but I fear it might become the focal point on the transom. Not yet sure if I should put port of call on a small 14 footer.

My vote is for the smaller. It looks really good.

The mahogany isn't perfect by any means, A few dents, a nasty scrape in the lower left, some darkening where the old rudder hardware allowed moisture past the old varnish.. but it's 55 years old, Spark can wear her scars with pride.

And thanks, The smaller of the two is what I am aiming for. Now to gather up some time to apply

I'd go smaller as well. With the rudder that will allow a wider viewing angle.

And ditto on the wood being too nice to cover over.
