Thanks for the video. I bought a Sandpiper last September. Didn't get a chance to put her in the water then. Looking to Spring for that. Can't wait. Her name is Searénité. Hull number 751. Before she goes in, I need to apply Interprotect 2000E and antifouling, plus a few repairs to the gelcoat. Wish I had a garage to work on her over the winter. Somehow winter would seem bearable.

I went through waters like that on a 365 ft destroyer and that was bad enough. I would have been screaming like a little girl in an 18 foot boat!!!

Hey Norman! I once read about a guy who went into 10 foot waves in such a boat. That was on Lake Ontario.
The story doesn't tell if he screamed like a little girl or soiled himself!

I do want to clarify my destroyer experience. The wind and waves were actually much higher than in your video but so was the ship! We were taking green water over the bridge and I would estimate the wave height was 20 feet or more. We had been told (scuttlebutt probably) that the point of no return for heeling was 45 degrees. At that point the water and fuel on board could not recover from the heel. Once while I was on the bridge I watched the inclinometer hit 44 degrees and then slowly ever so slowly right it self.

That went on for two days and was really the only time in two years at sea that we experienced anything approaching that kind of weather. My ship was old, being a WW2 veteran (actually it was exactly 6 months older than I was) and had been through a similar storm off the Philippines in 1945 in which two other destroyers sank.

I once sailed my 22 foot boat up the St Johns River in North Florida when the wind came up and blew very steep, short waves. The river is shallow (less than 10 feet in most spots) so the waves were more like saw teeth than waves. The boat would plow into a wave and then fall off the top of the wave and come crashing down. My fear was the front of the boat was going to break off.

Yes! I also had a good wave experience years ago when I was just south-west of Quebec City, riding the rising tide against some pretty strong wind. The waves were maybe 6 foot high and It was something new to see the bow under water at moments!
I got great confidence about my little boat from that event.
