Nothing like hours of sanding over your head while leaning in under a hull.

What fun.

I miss the days I could have been a fill in for Uncle Hunchback Smurf.

What??????

How can you claim to be a sailor and not sand??

When I was in the Navy on board ship we did not sand - we chipped. Then we painted, then we chipped what we just painted.

Every 6 months or so we would remove all the paint from the main deck and then paint it again. Then we chipped.

See a pattern here?

I don't put antifouling under my boat. I just use a hard brush from times to times.

Maybe I am not a real sailor?....   ;)

I don't use antifouling either. I do the same with the brush. I have a curved handle on my brush and I have taped a large plastic bottle to the brush end of the handle. That way it floats up against the bottom of the boat. I mostly have a algae issue but I just saw an ad by Exxon I think that they are going to use algae to make fuel. Maybe I could start collecting it and selling it to them to offset my sailing expenses!

If you can't polish it, Paint it, if you can't paint it, Salute it.

Getting the cabin ready for some two part epoxy primer before painting it.

I find beer helps "change my models" enough to make sanding an acceptable chore. Time wise, it's likely about 70% of a small boat build, if done to a moderately good finish. If you're going to put this much time and elbow pain into it, you should at least have a reasonable buzz.

All well and good Par, but as a Buddhist I don't drink. I have to suck it up and take it like the suffering all life is :D
