I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving. I went down to Florida to visit my children (that's backwards, usually its the parents who retire to Florida!) Anyway, I was stunned by the cost of keeping a boat in the water in Florida. Its like $8.00 a foot with a 30 foot minimum!! I guess I will stay in Tennessee on my little lake.

ouch.. 30ft minimum? Just because we are sailors, do they think our sails are made of money?

That is not the least of the reasons we are back to being trailerphiles.

Our Mud Hen 17 with trailer, outboard and full canvas cost less than one years slip, winter storage, insurance and bottom paint for our 34 or 31 footers.

Well, I keep the Lusty Slogger in the water and pay a flat $93.00 per month. If I had a 33 footer (the largest that will fit in these slips) I would pay $93.00 a month. Sailing is not a big pastime here in the Smokie's so boats are cheap (I was just offered a Venture 222 with a trailer for $800.00) and slip space is cheap for the most part. When I lived in Jacksonville I paid $140.00 for a spot on the Saint Johns River. I think its close to the same in Jax today. I was looking at slip space down South more and first of all if you don't have a Proper Yacht down there stay home!!

It was 55$ a foot (+ taxes) at the last marina I was!

Now I rent a dock space from a private resident and it is less than half the amount.

I know it is still some money but I would not like to rig, derig and pull my boat all the time. I sail 4 or 5 times a week during the season.

Am I reading this right? Fifty Five Dollars a foot plus tax???? Is that a year (I hope) since that would be $880.00 a month for my boat if it were by the month. $880.00 a year would not be bad as far as I am concerned.

Well, I pay $1116.00 for the year although I don't keep the boat in the slip for the entire year. You pay about $50.00 US more than I do per month. I could live with that. At that rate for the year you would pay $1760.00 and I would pay the $1116.00. But I don't have the added excitement of having to dodge ocean going steam ships!! My biggest issue so far was a large flock of Canadian Geese flying overhead.

Our last marina on Cayuga Lake: $40/ft plus $125 for electric for the season. SAME PRICE PER FOOT FOR WINTER STORAGE ON THE SHORE! On stands or cradle of your own purchase.

And, if you didn't winter store you weren't guaranteed a slip in the spring. And if you're too large to trailer there was no place else to go as all marinas were about the same rate. So that's about $2,800 annual with tax - any other services like dropping the mast or power-wash were extra.

We had a Pearson 31 shipped up from Annapolis and everyone who glanced sideways at the boat had to be paid something. The crane operator set the mast on a rack at the marina and an hour later the mast was placed on a truck with the boat for transport. $60 for the time it spent on the mast rack!

Not all pirates wear eye patches.

That is becoming the norm these days, everything is billed ala cart. I do a lot of business with UPS Small Package and its absolutely amazing the different fees they can come up with.

My marina is $93.00 a month, and that includes electricity (but not for live aboards) The only other fees they have is $50.00 for pumping out your boat if you won't come out yourself after they call you. Of course they have no dry storage and no marine railway. The club owns a large trailer that can be used by the members to pull their boats for bottom jobs etc. There is no charge for that but we do charge non members for the use of the trailer.

The old adage that a boat is a hole in the water in which you pour money is certainly true.
