Hi,

After spending the last couple of seasons sailing in circles on the river I'm about to embark on my first ocean side, overnight trip. Nothing too serious, we're sailing in company of a few other boats, will keep within 2nm of the shore and will be spending the night tied up to the visitor's jetty at Fremantle Sailing Club (after using their restaurant facilities).

However, to me it is a big adventure and I want to make sure I'm adequately prepared. So I'm working on a checklist of equipment that I need to take with me to ensure safety and comfort for skipper and crew on a 20ft fibreglass sloop with a small outboard.

Any suggestions?

Good for you! Your's is a tall order. It's more like checklistS, plural, and each skipper has their own way of doing it.

For starters, I'd start these lists:

- Mandated safety equipment
- Boat gear - for operation and simple repair
- Camping gear
- Personal gear

Start with a piece of paper for each and envision what you'd be doing and the weather you'll be doing it in. Don't go crazy though, it's just one night and most of your food will be at the dock in the evening.

Add, edit, delete after this cruise and then repeat for every cruise thereafter. It's never done, but that's the fun!

Thanks for replies and suggestions. I think that should get me started. I'll post up my checklist once I finish it, and fill you in if there was anything I missed.

Well, I don't know if I can be much help. The last time I went sailing on the ocean was in a slightly larger boat than 20 feet.

That's an impressive boat lusty, but it looks a bit under-canvassed
