A trick from the Bob Burgess book! ;-)

Post by Michel »

A simple trick that can prove to be very useful as well as pleasant. :)

I do 99% of my sailing single handed. The Lusty Slogger is a small light daysailer and any movement around the cockpit changes the balance and affects the steering. Right now I use a hiking stick (made for me by John Owens of JO Woodworks) as a tiller extension. This is an interesting looking set up and adds just that much more mysticism to the non sailor trying to determine just what are all those lines for anyway!!

It also adds something else in the cockpit to trip over

On my SCAMP I have routed lines under the deck that go to the forward end of the cockpit and then hook together allowing me to move the line back and forth from under the cuddy.

I know, remote steering on a 12ft boat, how daft is that! I'll be the one smiling while dry under the dodger in the rain :-)

The gray line in the background is the remote steering line.

I agree about not having to many things to trip on in the cockpit. :) I was trying this thing for the fun of it and I am not thinking about creating a way to use that that is less a mess! ;)

Knasmas has a very good setup IMO. 8-)

I agree and truthfully I was just being facetious about this. Anything that makes sailing easier for the sailor is for the best. I probably won't try this because as my mother told me once when she saw me trying to wheel a wheelbarrow "Norman, get away from that, you don't know anything about machinery". I have always remembered that and honestly my mechanical ability is not much better than that!!

It is a very good idea however.

You are so right. Look at some of the modifications I have done to The Lusty Slogger, a Sunbird 16
