I went out yesterday (Saturday the 13th). Winds were from 13 kts down to about 3. Most were in the 5 to 7 range which made for very nice sailing.
Temperatures were in the mid 80's. Some cloud cover but nothing to worry about rain wise. It was truly a nice day. The strange thing was that out of 36 boats at my marina only four of us went out all day. There is a cadre of about 10 boats that do sail fairly often and none of them were out. I was beginning to be worried that they knew something I didn't but NOAA Weather was silent on storms or the like.
Anyway, I can't go out again for at least another week. The horror, the horror.
You know when I used to work daily in marinas I discovered that very few boats actually go out and sail. In fact, I would be in a marina with hundreds and hundreds of boats and I would be the only person there, me and the boats.
I used to feel very sorry for the boats sitting unused and unsailed. I would sometimes count perhaps ten boats out, out of several hundred. This on a weekend day. In Houston, TX there is seldom a day that cannot be sailed, so weather was not an excuse.

There are several boats at my marina that haven't moved since 2007, more that haven't moved within the last two years. These are not small, inexpensive, boats. These are 25 to 32 foot boats that set someone back a fair amount of money. Many are near derelict and I have spoken to the marina operators. They told me that as long as they owners pay the slip fees there was nothing they could do. I think the worst case I have ever seen was a boat at a marina I used in Jacksonville Fl back in the early 90's. I went back to the marina in 2011 and the boat was still there, now almost worthless because of the lack of attention over the last 20 years. It must be nice to have enough money to not care about your possessions. For me, I obsess over a smudge on the hull of the Lusty Slogger!!
I am one if those with a boat sitting in the water not sailing much of the time. Two full time jobs, two ailing mothers, and Small Craft Advisory Weekends make for a lonely boat. We bought our WWP19 because it is "small & trailerable", but quickly learned that to sail more often she needed to live in the water ready to go.. We've sailed more since, but still..

I think we are talking about years of neglect, not just an occasional summer weekend.
