Hull Numbers and Vin numbers seem to vary by boat manufacturer. You could probably ask on the Cape Dory forum, or which ever boat specific forum for the particular boat you're interested in.

what I am thinking --- in a dedicated forum Mr. Stewart might be able to post his boat and someone will recognize it.

Thanks again guys. To clarify the situation: my Typhoon (year unknown), has the builders plaque/badge in the cockpit showing hull # 378. No HIN # on the transom. I don't know if the plaques changed over the years, I've seen others that appear to be the same although mine is actually plastic. If there were nearly 2000 Typhoons built over a 20 year span, in more or less equal quantities each year, then a hull number of 1486 that was built in 1978 would suggest that they made about 200 Typhoons per year beginning in 1963 (?) and therefore my hull #378 ought to have been built in 1964. I'm not certain of the introduction date or the date that the final Typhoon was built, but this would seem to be the best way to get to the approximate year of manufacture. Why do I even care? Condition trumps age to be certain, but I'm still curious...

Having done a bit of research on the Cape Dory site I now know the following: The Typhoon Weekender model was built from 1967 to 1986 (19 years), and a total of 1982 boats were built (avg. 104/year), so my revised estimate of my Typhoons year of manufacture is now 1972, (despite the lack of a hull #, which I thought became mandatory in '72- perhaps not). I also located hull #s 314,315,328,343,386,405, all claiming 1972 as their year of manufacture, so that would support my theory... Later years that also had the HIN # on the transom are of course easier to date. :o
