How do I prep a small boat for a mooring bouy?

Just moved to a town on Long Island, NY. I have been sailing with clubs for years (Sonar 23's) and recently purcased a used day sailer (Pearson Hawk LOA- 17 ft) I do not own a vehicle that can tow it to a ramp. I wanted to put it on a mooring bouy for the season. I have been coaming through my old issues of SCA- but there is no article that I can see that discusses how to prep a small boat for a mooring bouy. I doubt my boat has bouyancy built into it. How do I add some? Does anyone know if a Hawk will float if swamped? It has almost no bilge. What changes do I need to make so that it will basically stay afloat- Is a boom tent all I need?
