Solid wood vs ply centreboard

Post by microbe »

Hi All,

I'm just starting my SCAMP build - #591.

Well, that's not quite accurate - I've just bought the plans (not a kit) and have started messing about in the shed and scratching my head.

My first question to the group: what are your opinions on a solid wood centreboard instead of the usual ply? I've mocked up a blank using a recycled Tasmanian Oak door frame that was in the workshop. I guess this will be heavier than ply - but its free, and I already have it.

I've got access to a CNC router that I'll use to do the shaping - after climbing a steep learning curve.

Do it. You would be adding lead in any case so the initial weight works in your favor. I dont think you will need a CNC set up. If you are skilled with a plane, power hand planer or even a belt sander you can make a quite functional leading and aft edges.
