Building a SCAMP on commission

Would anyone, preferably who has already successfully completed a SCAMP, wish to do so again but this time on commission, for someone who wants one but is no longer up to building it themselves? Some builders have reported they would do things differently if given the chance? Your client would reside in Southern California. In the interest of time, would you build from kit or plans? How long do you estimate each way would take to complete in days. The kit is selling for about $2,800. I've seen foil kits, spars and sail for sale already made. ? What about small parts like cleats, lines, pulleys, etc. You would need supplies, epoxy resin, wood flour, paint. You might have some of this from your last build and like to use it up before it becomes useless. Including what you would charge for labor, how much would the total project take? Gig Harbor sells the trailer for about $2,000. Of course, the client would hope to make decisions about hull and deck paint, and finally, which of the two sail colors to get, etc. Cost/time estimates would be appreciated.

Hull #5 was destroyed in a freak 500-yr hailstorm in Northern Colorado in 2015

$13,287 plus tax and includes trailer. Not bad. But in Fries, Virginia, 2300 miles away from Southern California. Guess it could be shrink-wrapped, and shipped or someone paid to tow it cross-country.

I'm in the same situation - can't afford a fiberglass SCAMP and don't have a workshop of my own to build.

My solution might work for you: I called the local trades school and talked to their head of woodworking. He recommended a couple of recent local grads. One of them had experience sailing and was keen on the project. We're moving forward with the CNC kit; cost will be his time and cost of materials; he supplies the workshop space, tools and expertise. I'll lend a hand for some of the grunt work (e.g. sanding, epoxy coating) to try and expedite things. The project is to kick off in January after the Christmas orders he has committed to already, and we've figured 8-10 weeks of shop space will be enough to get the project to where I can move it out of his workshop and take it over - e.g. painting and rigging.

Perhaps reach out to local cabinet makers or other wood workers, or to a trades school if you have one nearby and see if you can find a similar solution?

I live in Victoria BC & share all the same concerns about building my own Scamp. Hope you can share info about your experience over the next few months.

Thanks. I will contact a SCAMP builder and propose an idea. But the idea wil be to impart this knowledge to younger people; maybe give them a profession. We'll see.

John

I contacted the gentleman. He is having challenges with the a supply chain (as is everyone else). Both his estimate of the cost $13K+ (which included the trailor) and his normal time frame (4 months) are out the window. Plus he has other orders for different kinds of boats that would be ahead of my order. So, possibly looking at a year (same as Gig Harbor). Unfortunately, not a good solution. But, I appreciate the referral.
