Substitute for Okoume

Post by dndrich »

SCAMPers:

I plan to put in a footwell in #330 Wildflower. I cannot find any local okoume plywood. I need some for the doubler of the hull, and for the false bulkhead aft. Would 9mm Meranti Hydrotek be OK for that purpose? I can get that locally I think.

When I was looking for a source of okoume in the mid-west I talked to wooden boat restoration company in southern Wisconsin. His question to me was "why use okoume"? He said they only use Meranti and that it is more rot resistant okoume. He also said Meranti also tends be a bit more rigid and does not bend as well as okoume.

I found a source of Meranti, and will purchase some. For my purpose of the footwell doubler and new false bulkhead it will work just fine. Thanks!
