SCAMP #419 Build in Canberra, Australia

Post by jocurtis »

Hi All, I'm new to the forum, though my build has been ongoing for about 18 months now. I've been documenting the build through a series of videos, and thought people here might be interested in following along.

Please be gentle, this is my first boat build and I'm stumbling through as best I can :-)

Here's the latest video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XaMXxQz7lPY

And here's the full playlist so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqVwD6u ... _gu9FwTtZy

Jo:

Loving the series, it's been very instructive and shows a nice level of detail - well done, mate!

One question, though: Given, it's your shop, you can do whatever you want, but....barefoot? My toesies are curling just thinking about it. Has that ever "bit" you (pardon the pun)?

Keep it up - I look forward to seeing the launch video!

Thanks man, I'm glad you're enjoying it :-)

With regards to barefoot. To be honest I never really gave it any thought until now, it's just something I've always done. Maybe it's a cultural thing, being in Australia being barefoot seems to be a lot more normalised than the rest of the world (that I've been to). I definitely do put shoes on if I'm doing anything I'd put protective gloves on for. Apart from a few stubbed toes here and there, never really had an issue, but maybe it's something I should be a bit more conscious of in the future?

Next episode is ready. I align the cockpit sole doubler, and cut the access port holes in preparation for gluing next week.

Hello Jo,

I found your series the other day and have found it very interesting. Thanks for putting in the effort of recording and posting.

I am also building from plans. I drew up and cut out most of the parts last fall. Haven't started on the planking, though the plan is to scarf a partial sheet to a full sheet of plywood together then cut the planks. I have built a scarfing jig that bolts onto circular saw, which works mostly but still needs some cleanup.

Over the winter, I have been pre-coating with epoxy. I finally got into the groove of applying the multiple-coats per day by waiting for the epoxy to get to slightly tacky point then applying the next coat, as described on the West System site. Then I just have to wait a couple days for the epoxy to cure before giving them a sanding.

Enjoy,
Greg.
